Retaining Wall Builders: Simple Steps to Construct

Retaining wall for home improvement can be an interesting DIY project for your home. If a homeowner builds it successfully following all the instructions, the structure can be durable. But if anything happens wrong, the wall may collapse within a very short period. Many people make fault during constructing the base of this structure. Here we will show you a step-by-step procedure to build a durable retaining wall for landscaping. Here, step by step ways to construct retaining wall guidelines will be provided according to retaining wall builders.

Simple Steps to Construct a Durable Retaining Wall according to Retaining Wall Builders

What you will need

  • Shovel – for digging the ground
  • Hand tamper – for compacting the soil
  • 4-feet level measuring tool – for measuring the level
  • Rubber hammer
  • Construction adhesive
  • Perforated pipes and cement
  • Blocks
  • Gravels, tiny stones, or coarse sands

Procedure

1. Dig the ground

In this step, you need to dig the ground carefully with a shovel, but before doing that, the builder needs to calculate the width and height of the wall. According to the height, the base will be determined, and the owner should dig the trench based on that calculation. A single fault can ruin the whole structure. Therefore, to build a durable retaining wall, you need to make the base stronger.

2. Compact the soil and measure the level

After making the trench, it is time to compact the ground using a hand tamper. Compact this layer firmly because it will increase the strength of the soil to bear the load of the structure. After compacting, use the level measuring tool to check the level of the trench. If it is level, then move to the next step, and if not, then compact the ground once again for leveling.

3. Fill the trench with the gravels

After compacting, fill the trench with gravel and coarse sands because these materials will reduce the pressure of the soil present beneath the wall. After filling the trench with stones, compact it again and measure the level again. Sometimes, geotextiles can be used in this step. In this case, instead of placing the gravels at first, place the geotextiles on the trench, and then place the stones and gravels on it.

4. Place the blocks and check the level

Once the stone-gravel layer is compacted, check the level once again. If the layer is leveled, you should place the blocks. After placing four or three of the blocks, measure the level once again with the level measuring tool. After setting up the first layer of the block, use the construction adhesive on the blocks and set up the second layer. Sometimes, drainage can be a major issue because of heavy rainfall, which can increase the pressure and is responsible for collapsing the wall. This is why it is better to use the perforated pipes in the gaps to improve drainage. You can seal any extra gaps that exist between the blocks and pipes.

5. Backfilling

It is an important step, and many people make wrong decisions during the backfilling process. While doing it, many people use the native soils, which is not a good idea. Instead of that, we recommend you choose the gravels to fill behind the walls.

These are the five steps to construct a durable retaining wall for landscaping. You can follow these simple steps to accomplish your project.
